Exam computers

A locked exam computer at every seat.

Students sit the test in the Institify exam app on your Windows or Mac computers. While it runs, the computer shows the test and nothing else.

Setting up

Set up each computer once.

Install the app on the computers in your exam room and register each one as an exam seat. Only computers your centre has set up can start a test.

  • The app shows your centre's name and logo.
  • It keeps itself up to date.
  • You can see which seats are online from your dashboard.

During the test

The computer is locked to the test.

The test fills the screen. Students cannot switch to another app, open a browser or use shortcut keys to get out.

  • Copying and pasting from outside the test is blocked.
  • A second screen, or a program that should not be running, is noticed and written down.
  • Leaving the app needs an unlock code that only your staff have.

Signing in

Students sign in at their seat.

A member of staff opens the seat. The student types their student ID and date of birth, checks their name, and starts the test. No one shares a password.

If the internet drops

A short drop does not stop the test.

The paper, with its audio and pictures, is saved on the computer before the test starts. Answers are kept on the computer as the student works and sent on when the connection comes back.

  • The student sees a small notice if the computer goes offline, so they can raise a hand.
  • If the computer restarts, the test picks up where it stopped once an invigilator enters their password.
